Book «Parc National des Ecrins, landscapes and men »
At the foot of high mountains of silence and light of the Ecrins National Park stretches a vast mosaic of meadows and cliffs, torrents and mountain pastures, forests and arable land, scattered hamlets. These landscapes that we often perceive as a free postcard have been patiently created with a thousand unrelenting gestures, shaped by the hands of mountain people, farmers, shepherds or foresters.
One needs to learn how to read these landscapes to understand how much they express man’s eternal struggle with the mountains.
Bertrand Bodin has managed to capture the gestures of those who can still today trim a hedge, plough a furrow, gather hay and weave wicker. Inspired by their patience, he has waited for the rare moment where light draws the languid curves of meadows, cuts hedges in a quick and bright flash, digs small valleys from a well of shadow. At the heart of sublime landscapes of the Ecrins, his photographs speak to us of men.
